Crossover Certification Pathway
The Bike Instructor Certification Program (BICP) recognizes and values certifications earned through other respected organizations. Our Crossover Pathway is designed to make joining BICP straightforward, professional, and supportive.
Why Crossover to BICP?
As interest in mountain biking continues to grow, so does the need for highly skilled, well-rounded instructors. The Crossover Pathway allows experienced instructors to expand their coaching toolkit, align with BICP standards, and continue developing professionally—without unnecessary barriers.
At BICP, we’re not just certifying instructors—we’re strengthening the cycling community by building connections across organizations and disciplines.
Who Is Eligible?
The Crossover Pathway welcomes mountain bike instructors certified by legally recognized organizations, including (but not limited to):
- PMBIA
- GSMBC
- NICA
- USA Cycling
- Cycling Canada
- Other nationally or internationally recognized programs

Crossover Options by Organization
PMBIA and GSMBC
Certified instructors may submit proof of certification and register for a BICP course.
Available pathways:
- Pathway Level 1 wanting BICP Level 1: Crossover through the BICP Level 1 recertification process.
- Pathway Level 1 wanting BICP Level 2: Register directly for the BICP Level 2 Certification.
- Pathway Level 2 wanting the BICP Level 2: Crossover through the BICP Level 2 recertification process.
NICA and Other Interscholastic High School Programs
Instructors may submit training documentation for review and register for a course.
Available pathway:
- (NICA 301 and equivalent) Pathway to BICP Level 1: Crossover through the BICP Level 1 recertification process.
USA Cycling, Cycling Canada, and Other National Programs
Submit your certification for confirmation and approval.
Available pathway:
- Pathway to BICP Level 1: Crossover through the BICP Level 1 recertification process.
Fees & Membership
- $200 USD recertification course fee.
- $65 USD/4year annual BICP membership.
BICP Course Fees
- Ride Leader $200
- MTB Level 1 $700
- MTB Level 2 $750
To maintain certification status, a $65 BICP membership/4 year is required.
Recertification Process
Crossover/Recertification is completed through a one-day testing process designed to confirm alignment with BICP standards while honoring your existing training and experience.
The assessment focuses on:
- Instructors are expected to accurately identify rider errors and deliver clear, constructive, and encouraging feedback. It is essential to apply the latest BICP teaching language, progressions, and best practices to ensure instruction is both systematic and effective.
- Risk management and safety practices.
- Professional conduct and decision-making.
This streamlined evaluation allows experienced instructors to demonstrate competency without repeating full certification coursework.
How to Apply
Applying for the BICP Crossover Pathway is simple and designed to respect your existing experience.
- Gather your documentation
Prepare a copy of your current certification and any relevant training records (for example: NICA coursework or equivalent). - Submit your certification for review
Send your documentation to BICP for confirmation. Our team will review your materials and confirm the appropriate crossover pathway. - Register for your one-day recertification or course
Approved applicants will register for either a one-day recertification testing process or the appropriate BICP certification course, depending on their pathway. - Complete the assessment
Successfully complete the online coursework, pass the in-person assessment, and join a growing network of professional instructors dedicated to safe, effective, and inspiring coaching.
