RACE DEVELOPMENT – WEEK 1

Equipment Required | Cones for Basic Runway. |
Trail Used | Flat open space and basic trail with no technical riding, single track. |
Session Duration | 3 Hours. |
Helmet Safety Check Bike Safety Check | Check helmet fit while parent/guardian is present if the helmet is too big, small, damaged, and needs to be replaced. Perform ABC bike check. Check wheels, stem, pedals, seat, and cranks – detailed check showing the riders what you are checking. |
Access Fundamentals: | Conduct Pre-Ride Assessment. |
Time required: | 2 hours. |
Set-Up: | Set up Basic Runway (single row or double row) for riders to ride through and show their ability to perform the skill. |
Skills: | Neutral and Ready Bike/Body Separation Braking Shifting |
Teaching Points: | Access Fundamentals and add speed progressions. |
Common Errors: | Problem getting equal pressure in pedals. Rider can’t maintain foot wedge. Rider looking down, not scanning ahead. Hips don’t move; shoulders become balance points. Elbows drop down. Rider drops a foot. Rider losing balance when leaning the bike. Rider zig-zagging off course. Rider not using both brakes. Rider can’t stop at marker. Rider’s body shifts forward when stopping. Rear wheel skidding. Rider grab and go of brakes. Rider losing control of the front wheel. |
