Level 3 ADVANCED BRAKING/ENDO/STOPPIE
WHERE THE SKILL IS USED
The Advanced Braking/Endo/Stoppie is a set-up for Nose-Pivot Turns and Nose Manuals. It is also used to demonstrate front-brake awareness/mastery and independent brake control. It can also be used as a set-up for rear-wheel hops.
KEYWORDS – ADVANCED BRAKING/ENDO/STOPPIE |
---|
1. Ready. 2. Load. 3. Explode. 4. Modulate – Apply Front Brake. 5. Body Wedge. |
INSTRUCTOR DEMONSTRATION
Side view demonstration.
PERFORM A DEMONSTRATION – The instructor must perform a demonstration for every progression.
LOCATION FOR DEMONSTRATION
Flat, open area.
SITE SELECTION – basic runway cone zone.
GOAL OF THE LESSON
To perform a brief Endo at a timing marker with control and to explore the balance point on the front wheel.
KEYWORDS – The describing words used to teach the skill.
PHASE BREAKDOWN – Helps the instructor create a deeper understanding of the skill, how it is broken down into the key Bike/Body movements, and the correct order they should be performed.
FIVE PHASE | ADVANCED BRAKING/ENDO | KEY BIKE/BODY MOVEMENTS TEACHING POINTS |
---|---|---|
Set Up | Ready | The rider is in a Ready Position. Speed: Slow walking pace progressing to brakes locked. |
Initiation Move | Load | The rider Stomps through their pedals and presses through their hands to compress the tires and suspension. |
Force-Producing Move | Explode Modulate/Apply Front Brake Body Wedge | The rider explodes their hips upwards, modulating the front brake and applying more weight to their hands. The rider creates a body wedge by clawing both pedals and braces their shoulders and arms forward and down onto the handlebars, creating an opposing force. |
Critical Instant | When the front brake is applied and the rear wheel lifts. | |
Follow Through | Return to Ready | The rear wheel is placed back on the ground, and the rider returns to a Ready Position, preparing for the terrain. |
Additional information:
This skill combines advanced braking with advanced rear wheel lifting. To make it more brake-related, we can add a rear-brake-only drill since the focus is independent brake control. Riders warm up by using each brake independently to come to a stop in the cone zone at a jogging pace. For rear brake drills, have riders practice intentional skids ( cardboard box drill to preserve grass/terrain).
GROUP MANAGEMENT – Have riders practice one at a time, allowing enough time in between riders.
METHOD OF OBSERVATION – Watch the riders from the side view of the cone zone near the timing marker.
ERROR DETECTION AND CORRECTION – Positive, Constructive, Positive.
ERROR DETECTION AND CORRECTION
Example: The rider cannot lift the rear wheel.
- Check the riders load. It should be heavy and forceful.
- Check that the rider’s hip shifts upwards and not forward towards the handlebar.
- Check the rider’s clawing technique.
- Check the rider’s seat height. The seat should be in the lowest position.
PROGRESSIONS – Teach the skill in smaller steps to ensure the rider is proficient in that step before advancing them to the next step in the skill.
RIDE STANDARD – The BICP ride standard is used for testing riders for certification.
SKILL PROGRESSIONS
PROGRESSION ONE
Have the riders practice the Rear Wheel lift/Endo on flat ground at a slow walking pace. Add a light amount of front brake, finding the balance point between the feet and hands. The rider chooses their timing.
Note: The front brake is applied after the rear wheel has been unweighted and begins to lift, NEVER TO THRESHOLD.
PROGRESSION TWO
Add timing and coordination. Have the riders practice Rear Wheel lift/Endo, on flat ground at a slow walking pace. The rider practices coming out of the Rear Wheel lift/Endo, by carefully releasing the brakes. Have the rider practice by applying more brake modulation to control the rate at which the rear wheel returns to the ground.
PROGRESSION THREE (RIDE STANDARD)
Add more timing and consequence. Have the riders practice the Rear Wheel lift/Endo, on flat ground at a slow walking pace. Have the rider practice by applying more brake while increasing the length of time the rear wheel is in the air. (add set time)
PROGRESSION FOUR
Add more timing and consequence. Have the riders practice the Stoppie, on a downhill slope. Have the rider practice by modulating the front brake to keep the bike rolling on the front wheel.
WRAP UP THE LESSON – Have the riders leave on a positive note. Remind the riders of their accomplishments and suggest a goal or things to practice.
