BICP LEVEL 1 FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION
Congratulations! On behalf of the Bike Instructor Certification Program, we welcome you to our Global family of Certified Bike Instructors.
The Bike Instructor Certification Program’s mission is to advance the global standard for bike skills instruction, driving an inclusive community that empowers our members through education, certification, service, and experience.
The BICP Level 1 Fundamental Skills Instructor Certification course was developed to provide comprehensive training for mountain bike coaching, rider assessment, and fundamental skills instruction. This material is valuable for many types of leaders, people working as ride instructors for mountain biking clubs, outdoor recreation educational programs, or recreational riders wanting to be better prepared when riding with friends.
The BICP Level 1 Fundamental Skills Instructor Certification course is intended to be an all-inclusive training for fundamental skills coaching. It is an intensive course focused on skill analysis, effective teaching, and skill progressions, with evaluations in each of those areas.
To prepare for the course, you must complete the online prerequisites, which will take approximately 24 hours. This includes reviewing the Ride Leader Course. Make sure to read each section and complete the quizzes thoroughly. It is mandatory to fulfill the preparation requirements, and it is expected to be completed two weeks before the start of the in-person course.
We require flat pedals in our mountain bike courses because our BICP-certified instructors have trained their feet to be active and engaged, knowing that if and when they apply these foot/pedal techniques back to their clips, they will be better riders.
Pro Tip: Flats vs Clips is not an either/or decision – it’s an “and.” When possible, learn and practice skills in flat pedals so that riders train their feet to engage the pedals.
If riders learn skills in flats and then apply the fundamentals of active and engaged feet to their clips, they will be better riders. By retraining their feet to be dynamic, their ankles will become more supple and flexible, which will help their pedaling power and form.
Remember, this isn’t a skills LEARNING course, but a skill TEACHING course.
You’ll be learning how to teach these skills to others.
